Eating On A Budget: How To Eat Well Without Spending A Fortune

One of the most persistent myths about healthy eating is that it is expensive.

Grass-fed wagyu, organic berries, and cold-pressed juice are expensive. But they are not what makes a diet healthy.

The most nutrient-dense foods available — eggs, oats, tinned fish, frozen vegetables, legumes, and rice — are among the most affordable items in any supermarket.

The Most Affordable High-Nutrition Foods

Eggs. One of the most complete protein sources available. A dozen eggs costs approximately $5–7 AUD and provides 12 high-quality protein servings.

Tinned fish. Tinned tuna, salmon, and sardines are rich in protein and omega-3s. A tin costs $2–4 and provides a complete protein serving.

Chicken thighs. Far cheaper than breast, and arguably more nutritious. High protein, good fat profile, extremely versatile.

Frozen vegetables. Nutritionally comparable to fresh — often superior because they are frozen at peak ripeness. A bag of mixed frozen vegetables costs $3–4.

Oats. Cheap, filling, high-fibre, and versatile. One kilogram of rolled oats costs $3–4 and provides weeks of breakfasts.

Legumes. Lentils, chickpeas, and black beans are among the most nutrient-dense, affordable foods available. Dried legumes are extraordinarily cheap per serving.

Rice and sweet potato. Affordable, filling, and nutritionally solid complex carbohydrates.

Budget Nutrition Strategy

Buy in bulk. Rice, oats, lentils, and frozen vegetables are significantly cheaper when bought in larger quantities.

Batch cook. Cook once, eat multiple times. A large pot of chicken and rice prepared Sunday feeds you for the week.

Avoid convenience. Packaged, pre-prepared, and processed foods are marked up significantly for convenience. The cost of cooking from simple ingredients is always lower.

Protein shake as supplement, not replacement. A kilo of whey protein provides 30+ servings and is one of the most cost-effective protein sources available.
