Fasting For Women: What You Need To Know
Intermittent fasting works for women. It just requires more nuance than it does for men.
Here is what you need to know.
The Hormonal Difference
Women's bodies are more sensitive to signals of energy scarcity than men's. From an evolutionary perspective, a body that perceives starvation is a body that is not in a safe state to reproduce. The hormonal system responds accordingly.
This means that aggressive fasting - very long windows, severe deficits, or fasting combined with intense training and low carbs - can disrupt the menstrual cycle, increase cortisol, and produce symptoms that men do not experience at the same protocol.
This does not mean women should not fast. It means the dose matters more.
The Adjusted Approach
- Start gentler. 12-14 hours overnight is a sensible starting point, not 16-18. Build up slowly and only if it feels good.
- Do not fast on heavy training days without reason. Some women fast best on rest days and eat around training days. Listen to your body.
- Watch your cycle. Many women find they feel better eating more in the luteal phase (the week or two before menstruation). Forcing a fast through that phase can backfire.
- Prioritise protein and nutrients in the eating window. A smaller window makes it harder to get enough. Do not let fasting become under-eating.
The Signs You Have Gone Too Far
If you experience any of these, pull back:
- Irregular or lost menstrual cycle
- Hair thinning or loss
- Persistent cold intolerance
- Sleep disruption
- Anxiety or mood changes
- Loss of libido
These are not badges of discipline. They are warning signs.
The Principle
Fasting is a tool, not a religion. For women, the right approach is the one that supports energy, hormones, and health - not the one that maximises the fasting window.
Start small, adjust based on how you feel, and never let a fasting protocol override clear signals from your body.
