How To Run Without Destroying Your Knees
"Running ruins your knees."
It is one of the most persistent myths in fitness. It is also wrong.
The Myth
The belief that running destroys your knees comes from a simple misunderstanding: running involves impact, and impact must be bad for joints.
But the research tells a different story. Studies on long-term runners show that they do not have higher rates of knee osteoarthritis than non-runners. In many studies, they have lower rates.
Why Running Does Not Ruin Knees
Your body is not a passive machine that wears out with use. It is an adaptive system. The cartilage, tendons, and ligaments around your joints respond to load by becoming stronger - just like muscle.
Regular, moderate running strengthens the structures around your knee. The impact, applied sensibly, is a stimulus for adaptation, not destruction.
The people who do develop knee problems from running usually have a different cause: not the running itself, but how they run.
What Actually Hurts Your Knees
- Doing too much, too soon. The number one cause of running injuries is a sudden spike in volume. Your body needs time to adapt. Add mileage gradually.
- Bad shoes. Worn-out or poorly fitting shoes fail to absorb impact and alter your gait. Replace them regularly.
- Weak hips and glutes. If your hips and glutes are weak, your knee takes forces it is not designed to handle. Strength training protects your knees.
- Poor running form. Overstriding - landing with your foot far in front of your body - sends impact through your knee. Landing under your body is gentler.
- Ignoring pain. Running through joint pain is not toughness. It is how minor irritation becomes a real injury.
How To Protect Your Knees
- Build mileage gradually. No more than a 10% increase per week.
- Strength train. Squats, lunges, and hip work build the support structure around your knee.
- Replace your shoes. Every 500-800km.
- Listen to pain. Muscle soreness is fine. Joint pain is not. Back off and address it.
- Run easy most of the time. Most of your running should be comfortable. Hard running is a small part of the program.
Running does not destroy knees. Bad progression, weak bodies, and ignored pain do. Run sensibly, and your knees will be fine.
