How To Start Intermittent Fasting (Without Making It Complicated)
Intermittent fasting is not a diet. It is an eating schedule.
You are not changing what you eat — you are changing when you eat. That distinction matters.
What It Actually Is
Intermittent fasting alternates between periods of eating and periods of not eating (fasting).
The most common protocol — and the simplest to start with — is 16:8: sixteen hours of fasting, eight hours of eating.
If you finish dinner at 8pm and eat your first meal at noon the next day, you have completed a 16-hour fast. Most of those hours are spent sleeping.
Why People Do It
- Simplified eating structure — fewer decisions
- Improved insulin sensitivity
- Mental clarity during the fasted state
- Easier calorie management (a shorter eating window naturally limits intake)
- Metabolic flexibility — the body becomes better at using fat as fuel
How To Start
Week 1–2: Push your first meal to 10am. This extends your overnight fast by 1–2 hours. Simple.
Week 3–4: Push to noon. This achieves a 16-hour fast from an 8pm dinner.
Gradual extension allows your body to adapt. Trying to go from breakfast-at-7am to noon immediately tends to produce hunger, irritability, and abandonment.
What To Expect
First week: Some hunger in the morning. This is normal and passes as your body adapts.
Week 2–3: Hunger in the morning diminishes significantly. Mental clarity in the fasted state often becomes noticeable.
Month 2+: The schedule feels natural. Many people report not wanting to eat in the morning any more.
What You Can Have During The Fast
Water, black coffee, and plain tea do not break a fast in any meaningful way. These are fine.
Anything with calories — including milk, cream, sweetened drinks — ends the fast.
