Identity-Based Habits: The Framework That Changes Everything
Willpower-based habits fail. Identity-based habits stick. The difference is in what you are trying to become, not what you are trying to achieve.

Identity-Based Habits: The Framework That Changes Everything
Most people build habits around outcomes: lose 10kg, run a half marathon, quit drinking.
Outcome-based habits have an end date. Once the goal is achieved — or abandoned — the habit has no further anchor.
Identity-based habits are different.
The Distinction
Outcome-based: "I want to run a half marathon." You train for 16 weeks. You run the race. Training stops.
Identity-based: "I am a runner." Runners run. Not because of a goal. Because that is who they are.
Every habit is a vote for an identity. Cast enough votes and the identity becomes real.
How To Apply This
Start with the identity you want.
- Not "I want to get fit." But "I am someone who takes their health seriously."
- Not "I want to eat better." But "I am someone who fuels their body with real food."
- Not "I want to be more disciplined." But "I am a disciplined person."
Then ask: what would a person with that identity do right now?
Would someone who "takes their health seriously" skip their workout because they are tired? Maybe occasionally. But not habitually.
The identity creates the standard. The standard drives the behaviour.
The Small Evidence Requirement
You do not need to fully embody the identity before adopting it.
You just need to start casting votes. Small, consistent evidence that the identity is real.
Go to the gym when you do not want to. That is a vote. Prepare your meals on Sunday. That is a vote. Choose water instead of soft drink. That is a vote.
Over time, the votes accumulate. The identity solidifies. The habits follow naturally.
