Morning Routines: What Actually Matters And What Doesn't
The morning routine has become a performance — an elaborate sequence of journalling, cold plunges, gratitude practices, and green powders that takes two hours and belongs to a version of your life that does not exist.
The truth is simpler.
A few keystone behaviours in the first hour of the day set a neurological and behavioural tone that influences everything that follows. The specific practices matter less than their consistency.
What Actually Matters
Sunlight. Get outside within the first hour. Five to ten minutes of bright morning light sets your circadian rhythm and triggers the cortisol pulse that drives healthy daytime energy.
Movement. It does not need to be a full training session. A walk. Ten minutes of mobility. Something that moves your body and signals to the brain that the day has begun.
No phone for 30–60 minutes. Beginning your day with other people's notifications puts you in reactive mode immediately. The morning is when your brain is most capable of deep, focused thought. Protect it.
Hydration before caffeine. A large glass of water before coffee. Your body is dehydrated after sleep.
Intentionality. Know what the day requires before it begins. Three priorities. That is enough.
What Does Not Matter As Much
- The specific journalling method
- Cold shower vs. warm shower
- A 5am wake time vs. 6:30am
- Whether you meditate for 10 minutes or 20
These are marginal differences compared to the foundational behaviours above.
The Real Goal
A morning routine is not about optimisation. It is about beginning the day in a state of ownership rather than reaction.
The person who controls their morning is more likely to control their afternoon.
