Sleep Is The Best Supplement You Are Not Taking Seriously
No supplement stack, protein powder, or pre-workout will outperform consistent, quality sleep.
Sleep is not passive downtime. It is the period during which your body repairs, resets, and grows.
What Actually Happens During Sleep
Muscle repair and growth. The majority of growth hormone secretion occurs during deep sleep phases. Without adequate sleep, training adaptation is severely compromised.
Memory consolidation. Learning — of skills, of information, of movement patterns — is cemented during sleep. Sleep deprivation prevents consolidation.
Hormonal regulation. One night of poor sleep measurably increases cortisol, reduces testosterone, and disrupts the hormones regulating hunger (ghrelin and leptin). Chronically poor sleep produces chronically dysregulated hormones.
Immune function. Sleep is the primary period of immune system activity. Chronic poor sleep is associated with significantly increased susceptibility to illness.
Cognitive function. After 17–19 hours without sleep, cognitive impairment is equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. Most people are making decisions in this state regularly.
How Much You Actually Need
The evidence is clear: 7–9 hours per night for adults.
Some people function optimally at 7 hours. Others need 9. Very few people genuinely function well on less than 7.
The person who claims to function fine on 5 hours is almost certainly not functioning as well as they believe.
The Non-Negotiables For Better Sleep
- Consistent sleep and wake times — even on weekends
- Dark room — even low light disrupts melatonin production
- Cool room — 18–20°C is optimal for sleep
- No screens 60 minutes before bed — blue light suppresses melatonin significantly
- Limit caffeine after 2pm — caffeine has a half-life of 5–6 hours
- Reduce alcohol — alcohol disrupts sleep architecture significantly
