The Cost Of Perfectionism On Your Health
Perfectionism is not a virtue.
In health, it is one of the most expensive mindsets you can hold.
How Perfectionism Shows Up
- The all-or-nothing workout: if you cannot do the full hour, you do nothing.
- The clean-eating spiral: one imperfect meal becomes a weekend of junk.
- The plan that must be perfect before you start: you never start.
- The missed day that becomes a missed month.
Perfectionism does not produce excellence. It produces paralysis and inconsistency.
Why It Fails
Health is not built on perfect days. It is built on the average of hundreds of ordinary days. The person who does a 30-minute session at 70% effort, three times a week, for a year, beats the person who does one perfect week a month and nothing in between.
Perfectionism sets a standard so high that you cannot sustain it. When you inevitably fall short, you interpret it as failure - and quit entirely. The standard becomes the reason you do not progress.
The Alternative: Consistency Over Perfection
- Done is better than perfect. A short, imperfect session you actually do beats the perfect session you skip.
- 80% is enough. You do not need optimal nutrition every meal. You need good nutrition most meals.
- Missed days are not failures. They are normal. Resume the next day without penance.
- Progress over perfection. Compare yourself to where you were, not to an ideal.
The Mindset Shift
The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to be the kind of person who shows up - imperfectly, consistently, for a long time.
That person gets results. The perfectionist, waiting for the perfect plan, the perfect week, the perfect motivation, never starts - or starts and stops, over and over.
Lower your standard. Raise your consistency. Watch what happens.
