What Breaks A Fast (And What Doesn't)

The question everyone asks: does this break my fast?

The honest answer: it depends what you are fasting for.

The Two Definitions

There are two main reasons people fast, and they have different rules.

Fasting for fat loss and insulin control. The goal is to keep insulin low enough that your body is burning stored fat. Small amounts of calories - a splash of milk, a few nuts - do not meaningfully change this. They add a few calories but do not stop fat burning.

Fasting for autophagy and cellular cleanup. The goal is the deeper process of cellular repair that occurs with truly zero calorie intake. Here, even small amounts of protein or carbs can interrupt the process.

Most people are fasting for the first reason. Be honest about which one you are.

What Does Not Break A Fast

  • Water - still or sparkling. Always fine.
  • Black coffee - no milk, no sugar, no sweeteners that trigger insulin.
  • Plain tea - green, black, herbal. No additions.
  • A pinch of salt in water - useful for long fasts, does not break it.
  • Sparkling water with lemon - the trace amount is negligible.

What Probably Does Not Matter

  • A splash of milk in coffee - if you are fasting for fat loss, this is fine. A few calories will not stop fat burning. If you are fasting for autophagy, skip it.
  • Sugar-free gum or mints - negligible effect for most people.

What Does Break A Fast

  • Any food with meaningful calories - meals, snacks, protein shakes, smoothies.
  • Bone broth with protein - it has calories and protein.
  • Juice or sweetened drinks - sugar breaks the fast immediately.
  • Milk or cream in significant amounts - protein and carbs add up.
  • Most supplements in oil capsules - fish oil, etc. contain calories.

The Principle

Do not let the details override the purpose. If you are fasting to control your eating window and reduce calories, a splash of milk will not ruin your results. If you are fasting for cellular cleanup, be stricter.

Perfection is not the goal. Consistency is.
