Why Walking Is the Most Underrated Health Tool Available
Walking is not the consolation prize for people who cannot run.
It is a powerful, accessible, and evidence-backed health tool that the majority of people are significantly underusing.
What The Evidence Shows
Metabolic health. Regular walking measurably improves insulin sensitivity, blood glucose regulation, and lipid profiles.
Cardiovascular health. 8,000–10,000 steps per day is associated with significantly reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and all-cause mortality.
Mental health. Walking — particularly in nature or sunlight — reduces cortisol, improves mood, and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Joint health. Walking maintains joint mobility and lubricates cartilage — particularly important in hips, knees, and ankles.
Cognitive function. Walking increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) — supporting memory, learning, and cognitive resilience.
Longevity. Multiple large-scale studies show walking volume is one of the strongest modifiable predictors of lifespan.
How Much
8,000–10,000 steps per day is the most commonly cited target. But even 5,000–7,000 steps is associated with meaningful health improvements compared to sedentary behaviour.
The dose-response relationship is clear: more is better, up to a point.
How To Build More Walking In
- Walk to work, or part of the way
- Take calls while walking
- Walk after every meal — 10 minutes post-meal significantly improves blood sugar regulation
- Morning walk as a daily non-negotiable
- Replace sedentary commute time with walking where possible
Walking is free. It requires no equipment. It has no negative side effects.
There is very little that offers this combination.
