Why You Are Always Hungry (And How To Fix It)
Hunger is not a character flaw. It is a signal.
If you are always hungry, something in your nutrition - or your lifestyle - is sending the wrong signal.
The Protein Problem
The single most common cause of constant hunger is inadequate protein.
Protein is the most satiating macronutrient. It suppresses ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and increases peptide YY and GLP-1 (the fullness hormones). Meals built around a solid protein source keep you full for hours.
Meals built around carbs and fat alone do not.
If your breakfast is toast and coffee, you will be hungry by 10am. If it is eggs and Greek yoghurt, you will not.
The Fibre Gap
Fibre adds bulk and slows digestion. Vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fruit physically fill your stomach and extend the time before hunger returns.
A plate with protein but no vegetables will leave you reaching for snacks. A plate with protein and a large serving of vegetables will not.
The Sleep Connection
Poor sleep increases ghrelin and decreases leptin. Translation: one bad night of sleep makes you hungrier the next day and worse at recognising fullness.
If your nutrition looks fine but your hunger is out of control, check your sleep before you change your food.
The Ultra-Processed Trap
Ultra-processed foods are engineered to be eaten in excess. They bypass your natural fullness signals. You can eat 1,000 calories of chips and still feel hungry an hour later.
Whole foods do not do this. Real food has a natural stopping point.
The Fix
- Protein at every meal (30-40g minimum).
- Vegetables or fruit at every meal.
- Sleep 7+ hours.
- Replace ultra-processed snacks with whole-food options.
Do this for two weeks and your hunger will change.
