16:8 Fasting Explained Simply
The 16:8 protocol is the most widely practised form of intermittent fasting.
16 hours of fasting. 8 hours of eating. Repeat daily.
How The Numbers Work
Most people align their 8-hour eating window with their social schedule:
- Noon to 8pm is the most common — first meal at lunch, last meal before evening
- 10am to 6pm suits those who prefer an earlier dinner
- 1pm to 9pm suits those with later social commitments
There is no universal correct window. The best window is the one that fits your life consistently.
What Happens During The 16 Hours
After the last meal is digested:
- Blood glucose and insulin levels fall
- The body shifts from glucose as its primary fuel source toward fat
- Growth hormone secretion increases (supporting fat metabolism and muscle preservation)
- Cellular repair processes — including autophagy — are upregulated
The body does a significant amount of maintenance work during the fasted state. Most of that work is disrupted by eating.
Is It Better Than Eating Spread Throughout The Day
For most people, yes — primarily because it simplifies the eating structure and naturally reduces caloric intake without requiring tracking.
That said: total daily nutrition — protein, calories, food quality — matters far more than the timing protocol. 16:8 is a tool, not a magic system.
Common Questions
Will it affect training? Most people can train fasted without significant performance loss, particularly for strength training. If you are training for performance at a high level, a small protein intake pre-training may be beneficial.
Will I lose muscle? Not with adequate protein intake. High protein within your eating window prevents muscle catabolism.
Can I have coffee? Black coffee does not break the fast. It may actually enhance the fat-burning effects of fasting.
